i think it’s very cool that people draw kardala with traditional Inuit facial tattoos, but i am also deeply amused by some of the tattoos that get chosen. like, modern tattooing traditions have changed and gotten a lot more personal in their meaning, but some are pretty established.
i just want y’all to know that when you put two Vs on her forehead you’re saying both her parents are dead? this is cool. head canon the fuck out of that. but, uh, i feel like this probably isn’t in the back of people’s minds when they do the thing.
actually I’ma reblog this again because I was searching the internets looking for useful sources for fan artist and writers but finding sources that would be helpful(and aren’t kinda mmmmm questionable) has been very difficult.
So if anybody has some rad sources A) I am very interested in them personally, and B) it’d be very useful for the fandom as a whole! I’ma keep scouring the internet/books and I’ll keep you guys posted ❤
To everyone hitting me up for more information about tattoos, @almostvivian is doing some good good research work here. I will say that finding online sources for this stuff? Definitely hard, but they’re out there. I’ve posted a bit about how to start doing research for Kardala. (Sup y’all? I’m Cree and I very literally do Indigenous-centered research for a living, as well as study how to help people do Indigenous research better. My work is focused on residential schools and my, like, academic life on media representation.)
So! Some things I would add to these resources. Obviously, modern tattooing traditions are generally very personal. Also like, my knowledge comes from a friend from Labrador, so her traditional tattooing knowledge is not necessarily the same as someone from Nunavut or Alaska.
If you can get your hands on it, one of the best sources on traditional tattoos and their revival is Tunniit: Retracing the Lines of Inuit Tattoos. More generally, and almostvivian has done this, be skeptical of sources written by/based on work done by old, white anthropologists. It’s biased as hell y’all, and I can tell you for a fact that my ancestors weren’t telling anyone who can and hung out with us for a bit and wanted to write all our knowledge down everything, especially personal stuff like “So what exactly does that tattoo mean?” especially when they were simultaneously going: “Also, stop that. It’s a sin and you look bad.”
so obviously it’s always shitty when any of the ipre die but i wonder if there weren’t also certain combinations of people being dead that are just… 200% more awful
there’s a cycle where magnus and lup both die. and it’s like the energy has gone out of the entire group. taako always gets quieter and sharper when lup dies, but without magnus to rattle around the ship and distract everyone, his furious silence is deafening. barry doesn’t leave his room at all, and without lup or magnus to remind her there’s a world outside her journals, lucretia doesn’t either.
there’s one cycle where merle and davenport both die about halfway through and there’s just this horrible feeling of pseudo parental loss. barry takes it especially hard; he lost his father before he can remember and he just lost two more. the twins too – the others notice them getting even closer; they’re often joined at the hip, but now they’re rarely in different rooms.
or, magnus and lucretia die and the other five feel, suddenly, very old. the two of them are the “little siblings” of the crew. magnus is so big and lucretia so smart that it’s easy to forget they have twenty and twenty-two year old bodies respectively. even with the extra years they’ve been given, they’re still so young.
davenport and lucretia die and suddenly everyone’s twice as reckless. taako and merle die and the crew finds themselves humorless; it seems like there’s no one to laugh with or at. merle and barry die and the crew never realized how much of the good nature on the ship stemmed directly from them until then
Justin: This is my character Taako and he’s a fucking idiot
Griffin: Hmmmm no, actually, he’s an incredibly competent wizard who was top in his class at magic NASA, so jot that down
Justin: K, so in his backstory Taako accidentally killed 40 people through his carelessness-
Griffin: well, ACTUALLY, it turns out Taako was innocent all along! it was really his assistant who killed all those people because he was jealous of Taako, so, like, jot that down
Justin: Okay, well before that Taako spent his childhood alone on the road, and he’s kinda paranoid cause he’s never had anyone to watch his back-
Griffin: BUT ACTUALLYHE HAD A SIBLING THAT LOVES HIM MORE THAN ANYTHING AND HAS BEEN WATCHING OVER HIM THE WHOLE ADVENTURE AND DESPERATELY TRYING TO REACH OUT TO HIM SO J O T T H A T D O W N
